Another great Parsha with many ideas for your Parsha Party. REMINDER - THIS IS A SPRINGBOARD OF IDEAS. YOU CAN CHOOSE ONE IDEA OR A FEW. AND HAVE THE KIDS GUESS THE CONNECTIONS.

Parsha Overview (Feel free to skip straight to the Party below - simply click the arrow next to this text and the overview will disappear.)

Hashem commands Moshe to count the Jewish people using a half shekel silver coin. The rich, the poor, everyone pays the same half shekel which is to be used for the sockets of the of beams. They are counted from age 20 and up. They are counted with coins instead of by person to avoid Ayin Hara.

Next he is told to make the copper Kiyyur – washbasin. It was made of the mirrors used by the women in Mitzrayim to beautify themselves for their husbands. The Kohanim needed to wash from the Kiyyur before they did Avodah.

He is given the recipe for the sweet smelling Shemen Hamishcha – anointing oil to pour over the Mishkan and Keilim. He was also given the recipe for the Ketores with mostly sweet-smelling spices but also included Chelbona, a not good smell.

Chachmei Lev – Betzalel and Ahaliav are put in charge of constructing the Mishkan and its parts.

The Jewish People are again commanded to keep Shabbos as a sign between them and Hashem. (Fun fact: Kiddush is in this week’s parsha – VeShamru Vnei Yisrael…).

Moshe goes up on Har Sinai for 40 days to receive the Luchos. When it seems that he is not returning some of the people gather to create the Egel Hazahav – Golden Calf to worship using their jewelry.

Hashem wants to destroy this Am Keshei Oref – Stiff necked nation, but Moshe begs on their behalf to save them.

He goes down on the mountain carrying the Luchos engraved with the Aseres Hadibros and when he sees the people dancing around the Egel he breaks the Luchos, destroys the Egel, and has the people that instigated it killed.

He returns to Hashem and tells Him that if He will not forgive the Jewish People then He should erase his name from the Torah.

Hashem forgives them but says there will be ramifications for many years to come. Hashem wants to send a Malach in His place with the Jewish people but Moshe convinces Him to accompany them Himself.

Moshe wants to see Hashem’s face but Hashem says he cannot. However He tells him He will place Moshe in the cleft of a rock and cover it while He passes His glory over the rock and will remove His “hand” for Moshe to see the back of him. (Rashi says this is the knot of Tefillin).

Moshe prepares a new set of Luchos and goes up the mountain to Hashem again. The Luchos were carved from Sapphire. Hashem gave the carvings that came out of it to Moshe to keep making him wealthy (Rashi).

Hashem shows him the 13 Middos Harachamim – Attributes of Mercy from Hashem.

Hashem warns that the people need to keep the Bris and the laws Hashem gives them when they come to Eretz Yisroel. Get rid of their Avodah Zara and don’t marry into the nations.

-Keep Pesach for 7 days and eat Matzahs.

-The first-born animals and people belong to Hashem.

-Keep Shavuos and Sukkos and be Oleh Regel for the 3 Yamim Tovim.

-The first fruit to blossom bring to Hashem as Bikkurim.

-Lo Sevashel Gedi BaChelev Imo – don’t cook meat and milk together.

Moshe descends back on the mountain and his face was radiating light and he had to cover it with a veil.
