Pinchas

Pinchas is Rewarded for standing up for Hashem’s Kavod

The last Parsha ends with Pinchas the son of Elazar, killing Zimri, the Nasi of Shevet Shimon, for his immoral behavior. Pinchas stood up for the honor of Hashem. Hashem had been extremely upset at the inappropriate behavior of the Jewish people with the Midyanim. And when Pinchas stood up and brought an end to the chillul Hashem, Hashem’s anger was appeased.

To reward Pinchas, Hashem makes a Bris – a treaty of peace, that Pinchas will now officially become a Kohen too. (Rashi: When Aharon and his sons were anointed as Kohanim for themselves and future generations, Pinchas who was already born had not been anointed. It is here that he joined the status of Kohen with his family.) Pinchas had killed both Zimri and the Midyan Princess named Kazbi.

The Midyanim need to be punished

Hashem commands Moshe that they need to fight the Midyanim because they sent their people to entice and make it hard for the Jewish people and cause them to sin.

Count the Nation again before going to Eretz Yisrael

Hashem tells Moshe and Elazar to do another counting of the nation from males age 20 and up.

The Pesukim begin to name all the families descended from the Shevatim.

Dasan and Aviram’s downfall is mentioned

While mentioning the families of Reuven, the Pesukim stop to mention Dasan and Aviram from Shevet Reuven, they were the sons of Eliav and caused trouble for Moshe together with 250 men from Reuven and Korach’s rebellion. The earth swallowed Dasan and Aviram together with Korach and a fire destroyed the 250 men and they became a sign and a reminder that nobody but the Kohanim do the jobs of the kahuna.

Korach’s sons did Teshuva

The Pasuk then says that the sons of Korach did not die. They did teshuva.

The counting is continued

The rest of the Shevatim’s families are named and counted. When it gets up to the family of Asher it names Serach bas Asher. She was included here because she was still alive (Rashi).

The total counting of the nation was 601,730.

Divide up the land into portions for each Shevet

Moshe is commanded to divide the land of Eretz Yisrael into portions for each Shevet to be inherited by these people counted age 20 and up. A smaller Shevet gets a smaller size portion, and a larger Shevet gets a larger size portion.

How will it be divided up? Through a Goral – lottery system that worked through Ruach Hakodesh.

Shevet Levi is counted separately

Next Shevet Levi is counted separately. They were not included in the counting before this because they do not inherit a portion of the land. They were 23,000 from age 1 month and up.

Everyone from the Dor Hamidbar is gone – except Kalev and Yehoshua

The counting of the nation that was done now had not one man left over from the original counting in the beginning of the Midbar (except Kalev and Yehoshua) because the generation all died in the Midbar. (Rashi: However, there were some women that were still alive because they did not sin by Chet Hameraglim and were excited to enter the land.)

The daughters of Tzelafchad want a portion of land

As the land is being divided by families in each Shevet, there were five daughters of Tzelafchad from Shevet Menashe that approached Moshe. Their names were Machla, Noa, Chagla, Milka, and Tirtza. They told Moshe “Our father died because of his sin in the Midbar and did not leave any sons. Therefore, our family will not get a portion!” Moshe heard their case and asked Hashem what to do.

Hashem responds that the daughters should receive their father’s portion.

The halacha of inheritance when there are no sons

The halacha is presented that if someone dies without a son, their daughter inherits their portion. If the person has no daughters, then it goes to his brothers. If he has not brothers then it goes to his father’s brothers. If his father has no brothers then it goes to the closest relative.

Moshe gets to see Eretz Yisrael’s view from the Mountain but will not merit to go into the land

Hashem tells Moshe to go up on Har Avarim to see the land of Eretz Yisrael from there as he will not be going into the land but will die beforehand just as his brother Aharon did. He will not go into the land because of his sin in Midbar Tzin when the nation was fighting and Moshe hit the rock instead of bringing Kiddush Hashem with water.

Yehoshua is appointed as the next leader

When Moshe heard that he will die, he asks Hashem to appoint a leader over the people to lead them in the land. Hashem responds that Moshe should take his student Yehoshua Ben Nun and lean his hands on him in front of Elazar HaKohen and all the people. He should give from his “Hod” – radiance/greatness onto him. He will stand before Elazar and ask the Urim Vetumim for guidance on going to war.

The Laws of Karbanos

Hashem commands Moshe to tell the Jewish People that they must bring the different types of Karbanos. This includes the daily Karban Tamid and the Mussaf Karbanos brought on Shabbos, Rosh Chodesh, each day of Pesach, Shavuos, Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur, each day of Sukkos, and Shemini Atzeres. (Today we don’t have karbanos but we daven Mussaf in its place). Through bringing these Karbanos Hashem remembers our zechusim.
