Another great Parsha with many ideas for your Parsha Party. REMINDER - THIS IS A SPRINGBOARD OF IDEAS. YOU CAN CHOOSE ONE IDEA OR A FEW. AND HAVE THE KIDS GUESS THE CONNECTIONS.
Parsha Overview (Feel free to skip straight to the Party below - simply click the arrow next to this text and the overview will disappear.)
Hashem commands Moshe to take Shemen Zayis Zach – pure olive oil for Aharon to light the Menorah each day with enough oil to last from evening until morning.
Moshe is then told that after the Mishkan set up is completed, he should bring close Aharon and his four sons, Nadav, Avihu, Elazar, and Issamar, and make the Bigdei Kehuna – clothing for the Kohanim. These clothing are to be worn when they serve Hashem in the Mishkan.
The Kohen Gadol, Aharon, gets 8 garments:
1. Choshen – Breastplate with 12 stones
2. Ephod – An apron-like garment made of blue, purple, and red wool, linen, and gold thread.
3. Me'il – A blue robe that goes over a tunic
4. Kesones Tashbetz – A checkered tunic
5. Mitznefes – a linen turban
6. Avnet – a belt or sash
7. Tzitz – a gold plate worn on the forehead
8. Michnasayim - pants
The Ephod should be made by a master weaver and have two shoulder straps attached and two Shoham stones (one on each shoulder) engraved with the names of the shevatim, 6 on each stone. 2 Chains of pure gold will attach them on the settings.
The Choshen should be a breastplate made by a master weaver with the same type of threads as the Ephod. It should be square shaped and doubled over. Fill it with 4 rows of precious stones / gems. In each row has 3 stones. The stones will have the names of the Shevatim engraved in them. At the ends of the Choshen make pure gold chains. There are also rings on the Choshen for the Ephod to be tied to it. The Choshen should be worn over the heart of the Kohen Gadol with the Urim Vetumim placed inside of it. Rashi explains that Hashem’s special name, the Shem HaMeforash is to be written and placed in the folds of the Choshen and would light up the letters of the Choshen as answers from Hashem.
The Me'il should be made of blue wool with an opening for the head at the top and the collar folded inward. On the hem it should have pomegranate designs and golden bells one after the other (pomegranate, bell, pomegranate, bell, etc). It is important for Aharon or the Kohen Gadol to be heard when doing the Avodah and enters and leaves the Kodesh Kedashim. (It is also to atone for the sin of Lashon Hara).
The Tzitz should be made as a gold plate for the forehead of the Kohen Gadol. On it inscribed Kodesh LaHashem. It is placed on a blue cord of wool and tied to the Mitznefes turban. Aharon should wear it on his forehead to bear the burden of forgiveness for the people.
The Kesones should be made with a checkered design, and make a wool turban and an embroidered belt.
The 4 Garments of the regular Kohanim should be:
1. Kesones – tunic
2. Avnet – belt/sash
3. Migbaas – hat
4. Michnasayim - -pants
The Kohanim should be dressed in these clothes and anointed with oil and be holy.
The Shivas Yemei Hamiluim – The 7 days of inauguration for the Mishkan.
For 7 days the Kohanim should take Karbanos and Matzah offerings brought in a basket. They should be bathed in water and clothed in the special clothing and anointed with oil. They should bring the karbanos and burn them for Hashem and put the blood on the corners of the Mizbayach. They lean their hands on the hands of the Rams and they put the blood of one of them by their right ear, thumb, and big toe. They take the Matzahs and wave them around. There are many more details discussed with the Karbanos brought repeatedly during these 7 days. They are all bringing Kapara – forgiveness to the people.
The Mishkan / Ohel Moed is the place where Hashem will make meetings with the people. It will be holy along with the Kohanim and Hashem will dwell there. It will serve as a reminder that Hashem took them out of Mitzrayim.
The Mizbayach HaZahav – A Mizbayach made for bringing the Ketores. It is to be made of wood and overlaid with gold and it has a golden crown on it. It needs rings and poles to carry it like by the other Keilim. It is placed in the Ohel Moed on the other side of the Peroches from the Aron. Aharon would bring the Ketores on it daily and once a year on Yom Kippur bring a Karban Chatas on it.
Did you know? – Moshe’s name is not mentioned in this Parsha because the Chet HaEgel he told Hashem if He won’t forgive the people he should erase his name out from the Torah. When a Tzaddik speaks Hashem listens to his words even without the condition. Therefore he took out Moshe's name from this Parsha.
