Vayikra
The Parsha begins with Hashem calling to Moshe from the Ohel Moed/Mishkan that they built, to give over the laws of the Karbanos to be brought in the Mishkan. (Rashi says that the word Vayikrah is an expression of love and affection. When Hashem would give Moshe a commandment, He would call out to him first with affection).
1. The Olah – The karban that is burnt completely to go up to Hashem and is an atonement for man. He puts his hands on the head of the animal and it serves as a Kapara (atonement) for him. He then slaughters the animal and the Kohanim sprinkle the blood on the Mizbayach and the Kohanim follow the steps of cutting up the Karban and burning it properly. The Karban can only be from certain types of sheep or cattle or certain birds and they can not have a Mum – blemish.
2. The Mincha – There are several types of Karban Mincha, This Karban is prepared with fine flour, with oil poured over it and place the Levona spice on it. This is called a poor man’s Karban as it costs far less than an animal. None of the Minchas can be Chometz and no honey from fruits on the Mizbayach.
a. Minchas Soles -A person brings the flour etc to the Kohanim and they scoop fist fulls of the flour, oil, and Levona onto the Mizbayach and burn it to Hashem. After this is done whatever was left goes to the Kohanim.
b. Minchas Maafeh Tanur - A person that wants to bring a baked Mincha, it should be Chalos Matzos (unleavened loaves of bread) or Rekikei Matzos (unleavened wafers) and they should be anointed with oil.
c. Minchas Machavas - A person that wants to bring a pan made Mincha, it should be of fine flour and oil Matzos – unleavened. It should be broken into pieces and oil poured on it.
d. Minchas Marcheshes - A person that wants to bring a deep fried pot Mincha, it should be of fine flour and oil.
e. Minchas Omer – This type of Mincha is brought on the 2nd day of Pesach. It marked the beginning of counting the Omer. It was brought from the first of the crop of barley and the person bringing this Mincha should roast the seeds over a fire and break it up and pour oil and Levona on it.
Ø All the Karbanos brought on the Mizbayach should be salted as part of a Bris that Hashem made with the waters when He separated the water during the days of creation.
3. The Shelamim – The person bringing the Shelamim brings either a male or female cattle with no Mum (blemish). The Shelamim is to bring peace to the world. He leans his hands on its head and the Kohanim sprinkle the Mizbayach with blood. They burn the different parts as a Karban to Hashem, and some parts go to the Kohanim and then the person that brought the Karban gets the rest of the meat to eat.
4. The Chatas – If a person does an Aveira by accident on one of the Mitzvos “Lo Sasei” (that is says Do Not Do) he brings this Karban. Whether it’s a Kohen Gadol, All the people of the community, the Nasi (leader), or any person, they all need to bring a Karban Chatas to atone for their sin. They lean their hands on the animal, (for the community they have the leaders do this) and in some of the cases the Kohen dips his finger 7x in the blood of the animal and puts blood on the Mizbayach. He separates different parts and brings the Karban.
5. The Asham – This Karban is brought by a person that does specific Aveiros related to Tumah, or swearing falsely, where he betrayed against Hashem. It is also brought for someone that sins with the things that are designated as Kadshei Hashem or if he isn’t sure if he is guilty of an Aveira.
He brings a sheep, or if he can’t afford it he brings a bird, to the Kohen who sprinkles the blood on the Mizbayach and brings the Karban. If he can’t afford even a bird, then he brings fine flour, but this time without the oil and Levona. In some cases he gives money to the Kohen, who in turn brings the Karban for him and atones for his Aveira. Someone that sins with money related manners (like stealing) needs to pay back and needs to bring an Asham.
